Insider Information: Abel is an undergraduate at the University of Washington where he is majoring in Law, Societies, and Justice and minoring in Political Science. He is interested in criminal law and one day hopes to go into politics.
Why I'm Part of it: "The efforts of many individuals coming together, to make a stronger whole, is something I truly believe in. The progress made by The Borgen Project is commendable because the organization acts as advocates for socioeconomically deprived nations such as Ethiopia, where my family is from."

Bailout Package for Hunger


The United Nations is urging countries to create bailout packages not just for failing businesses and banks, but also for the millions of people that will go hungry next year around the world. The UN World Food Programme (WPF) will need $5.2 billion at the beginning of next year to support their programs fighting world hunger. The WPF could fund its work with just one percent of the money being proposed for current bailout packages.

Better Agriculture and Drinking Water


The United Nations held a meeting to discuss harnessing Africa's natural resources to provide clean drinking water for villages, irrigation systems, and major river basins for agriculture and the development of hydroenergy. They proposed a $65 billion, 20-year Blue Revolution water management program which will be critical in providing food and water for people. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization has organized a 3-day conference for delegates from 53 different African nations to meet and discuss this proposal.

Putting Scraps to Good Use


In Nairobi, scrap metal tin cans are being recycled and made into paraffin lamps. These lamps, which take about one minute to make and cost less than two dollars, are used by millions of Kenyans who cannot afford electricity for their homes.
