The United Nations' new Academic Impact initiative wants universities worldwide to help foster development. The UN Academic Impact will hold its first conference on Dec. 15 in Asturias, Spain. The initiative will include more than 500 institutions from more than 90 countries. Every university has agreed to actively support 10 principles taken from the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Millennium Development Goals. The 10 principles cover human rights, literacy, sustainability, citizenship, economic stability and conflict resolution.
According to the Academic Impact's website, the goal of this initiative is world peace. And world peace can be achieved through higher education in economic and social development with the above principles in mind.
