Universal Children's Day

Saturday November 20th is Universal Children’s Day, as declared by the United Nations. To mark this occasion a survey was conducted to see what the wants and needs of our world’s children living in poverty are. The survey, Small Voices, Big Dreams, questioned children ages 10 to 12 in 30 countries throughout Africa, Asia and the Americas. ChildFund Alliance conducted the survey and found that 1 in 3 children goes to bed hungry at least once a week; more than 25% spend half or every day working, including household chores and other work but not counting school or homework. All of the children surveyed recognized the importance of receiving an education and when asked what they needed most, one in three answered food.

These “small voices” must be heard because they are the future generation. It is not only governments’ responsibility to make sure we achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for the sake of these children, but also our responsibility to make sure we pressure leaders to work towards these MDGs.
