Crowd Waits To Hear Clint Borgen Speak

Night of Nets

"No child should die from a mosquito bite," is the simple yet powerful statement used by World Vision to promote its latest country-wide campaign against malaria. Night of Nets calls young people to organize events on school campuses and parks to raise awareness around their community about the easily prevented disease that is responsible for countless lives that cannot afford an insecticide-treated bed net. Along with raising funds to provide nets for families in a Zambian community, they will be petitioning government leaders to commit to using more resources to combat malaria. Communities are encouraged to schedule their "night" close to World Malaria Day, April 25.

Children Participate in Literacy Campaign

Send My Friend to School is a campaign throughout schools in the UK that aims to hold its government accountable for the millennium promise to send every child to school. 75 million children around the world do not have access to education, and while this is a big improvement from the 100 million in 2005, the number is still too high. This year, the campaign is focusing on The Big Read, an event involving young people from 100 different countries. Students are encouraged to write stories and poems underlining the importance of improving literacy for every child in the world, sending those stories to their prime minister.

Less on Weapons, More on Poverty

India is home to one-third of the world's poor. At the same time, the country has a huge fascination with arms and aviation. 14% of their total budget was spent on defense last year, 45% of which was on weapons alone. Last month, they hosted 25 other countries in the 7th Biennial Aerospace Exhibition. This fascination with military power has brought forth a lot of criticism from different local civil society and advocacy groups. In response to the exhibition, these groups held a parallel event emphasizing the need for India to spend less on defense and focus more on solving their domestic crises of starvation and deprivation.

A Powerful Noise LIVE

The ONE campaign will be teaming up with humanitarian organization CARE and Fathom entertainment on March 5, 2009 to bring a special documentary screening to 450 theaters across the country. The documentary, "A Powerful Noise," follows three women from different countries as they fight HIV/AIDS, promote girls' education, and unite ethnically divided communities. Following the film will be a live town hall discussion with leading humanitarian experts and activists, including former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and New York Times columnist and acclaimed author Nicholas Kristof.

Millennium Campaign Meeting in Madrid

January's Madrid High Level Meeting on Food Security for All hosted country leaders, representatives, non-governmental and civil society organizations to discuss the issue of soaring food prices. Country leaders were challenged to increase their funding to help the world's hungry in these times of economic instability. The Spanish government committed to donate a total of 1 billion Euros over the next five years towards advancing agricultural development and food production. The UN Millennium Campaign encouraged others to follow this example and increase their support as well.

While some people are giving Valentines to their sweethearts, others are sending messages to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner about canceling debts to address poverty, as part of
Jubilee USA's What's on Your Heart? campaign. Americans are all struggling because of the financial crisis, but poor countries are being hit the most as their debt pushes them further into poverty. What's on Your Heart? encourages people across the country to send heart- shaped messages to Mr. Geither about how important this issue is.
