BEIJING Aug. 12 -- China's first Poverty Relief Trade and Investment Conference will be held from October 16th to 18th in the city of Dalian, in Northeast China's Liaoning Province.

Deputy Director of State Council's Leading Group Office on Poverty Alleviation and Development Wang Guoliang says the conference aims to build a bridge between the country's poor and developed areas, to improve mutual development.

Official statistics show there were 26 million poor people in China last year, down from 250 million in 1978.
