Leaders of several poor countries thank the U.S. government and American taxpayers for helping with economic development.

Grants totaling $7.3 billion from the Millennium Challenge Corporation were distributed among 38 nations in Africa, Asia, Europe and Central America. The Millennium Challenge Corporation was created by Congress in 2004 as an independent agency to help fight global poverty. Three countries, Tanzania, Burkina Faso, and Albania specifically thanked the United States government and its tax payers Tuesday at the United Nations for helping with economic development. This independent agency allows the recipients to decide on the best programs to reduce poverty and is having a major impact on the development of their countries.
