Zanzibar Plans to Invest Millions in Much-Needed Power Projects

The small island of Zanzibar has been historically plagued with frequent power shortages, just this year the country went three months without any power at all. These developmental inconsistencies certainly hurt regional tourism, which represents 25% of the local economy and 70% of foreign exchange.

The country plans to invest over $150 million in the next two years for power projects to alleviate these frequent electricity outages. The Zanzibar government will invest around 88 billion shillings for a 100-megawatt (MW) power plant, with most of the funding for this project coming from the U.S. government's Millennium Challenge Corporation.
