Syria Undertakes Povery-Reduction Measure


In order to fight poverty and help 420,000 impoverished families, the Syrian government has announced a 250 million dollar aid plan, according to state media. The DeputyPrime Minister of Economic Affairs, Abdallah Dardari stated that 14% of 22 million Syrians are suffering from poverty and a fifth of its labor population are unemployed. As Syria is gradually becoming a market economy, the country is suffering from considerable deficit which is linked to poverty. The Minister also said that the aid will consist of cash loans which will be distributed among the impoverished families. As a part of a five-year plan (2011-2015), the Syrian government is also planning to invest $14 billion in the development sector of the country.
