A Step Closer To Peace

It's no peace treaty, but it's a stride. The nation of Sudan and a major rebel group in Darfur have signed a ceasefire agreement which cancelled the death sentence of 100 fighters and promises of further discussions. The talks between militant groups and the Sudanese government may resume this upcoming week.

The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) rebels signed the temporary ceasefire on Saturday February 20. The other main militant group involved in the seven-year Sudanese-Darfur conflict was absent from the meeting. Much work is still to be done. Nevertheless, this agreement is a great leap toward the goal of peace.
