Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration

Kouame Remi Oussou is a polio survivor from the African nation of Cote d'loire. In 2004 the civil war ended but left the nation torn in two. Kouame is now a monitor and evaluation officer for DDR( disarmament, demobilization and reintegration) for the United Nations Development Programme in the Central African Republic. He works to help address the needs a country needs after experiencing periodic civil conflict. Kouame says that this DDR process takes a long time and is not yet perfected to be most efficient, a lot of their focus goes to socioeconomic studies. He also has to think in advance on what the ex-combatants will and can make a living after disarmament and demobilization. His experiences have led him to a desire and passion to work hard and solve conflicts. He contracted polio at the age of 2 but his motto has always been, " that hard work, handicap or not, anyone can succeed". Kouame is the first polio survivor to become a Rotary World Peace Fellow.
